#WiggleWednesday It’s not just seismometers that can record earthquakes. Cables along the ocean floors can record vibrations & changes in pressure + temperature. Each cable can be used as a sensor, allowing us to locate earthquakes in more remote regions! doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

Delighted to see that our paper on Crustal Structure within the Turkana Depression in the East African Rift System is now published. Many thanks to Ian Bastow Rita Kounoudis and our US, Ethiopian and Kenyan-based collaborators for their awesome work! sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Many of our seismometers (which detect earthquakes) were provided by the team at SEIS-UK who provide valuable support for UK seismologists like myself. Without them, our research would not be possible!

#WiggleWednesday Seismometers can also detect goals scored during football matches! In 2016 a seismometer deployed at a school in Leicester was able to record a 0.4 magnitude event attributed to Jamie Vardy’s goal against Everton – named a Vardyquake! Find out more: VardyQuake

#WiggleWednesday We can use seismic data to monitor landslides. Ambient noise correlation has shown a decrease in apparent seismic velocity before a landslide – find out more about the challenges of this method here: doi.org/10.1016/j.ears…

#WiggleWednesday Seismometers have been used to record bell ringing in different countries. Characteristics of seismic signals highlighted differences between countries in how long and when they rang the bells! Find out more here: doi.org/10.1007/s10950…

Sad to say goodbye to Dr Jade Eyles last week. It's been great having you in the team and we'll miss you. Looking forward to hearing about your next chapter though, and you know where we are if you're ever in need of a seismometer loan (we won't ask you to QC them 😉!).

That's a wrap on our first #WiggleWednesday series! We hope you have enjoyed learning about the different ways we can use seismic data to learn more about our planet.

Fun training day SEIS-UK in Leicester playing with shiny new Horizon seismometers. Now feeling confident for our (all female seismologist!!) deployment team to head out to central Iceland in a few weeks time 💪 Thanks SEIS-UK staff! Durham Earth Science

This week we’re off deploying seismometers in central Iceland for our brand new network exploring volcanoes and geothermal areas int the region. 15 instruments from SEIS-UK proudly on display after testing in the warehouse before we first headed into the field Durham Earth Science

KasabianHQ's Summer Solstice II on the 6th July was detected at SEIS-UK using seismometers at the Geology at Leicester. The tempo (BPM) of songs can be seen in the spectrogram (bottom), with dancing and jumping from the crowds creating some #Kasabiquakes in the seismogram (top).

Wow, what a busy summer for us Geology at Leicester! The next deadline to borrow equipment from the Geophysical Equipment Facility is fast approaching. Full training is provided. Applications must be in by 1st Nov. Get in touch if you have any projects you'd like to discuss. NERC GEF

Did you know seismology can be used to detect nuclear tests, submarine disasters, underwater gas pipe explosions and much more? There are still tickets available for a free seminar on forensic seismicity Space Park Leicester tomorrow space-park.co.uk/2025/06/semina… @geol
