#FoulingProject, part of our Large-Scale Surveys, detects non-indigenous species and their patterns of distribution & diversity on multiple scales. Near large commercial hubs, we survey over multiple years to detect new invasions and track changes over time. #ProjectDeepDive

#ProjectDeepDive #FoulingProject communities show trends from the poles to the equator: 1) Marine Invertebrate Biomass ⬆️ 2) Biodiversity ⬆️ 3) Non-Native Species ⬆️. With @SmithsonianPanama we have created a #marineinvasions biosecurity network along every Americas coast.

#ProjectDeepDive We're taking a closer look at our #OceanTravelersII project. Goals: 1) quantify proportion of floating litter w/ epibionts, 2) quantify occurrence of functional groups on floating/sinking litter, 3) compare sizes/diversity of species of barnacles on litter items.

#ProjectDeepDive There are currently 120 beaches being sampled worldwide by OT-II volunteers. Sampling is done every 3 months with a total of four sampling events per beach site. Volunteers collect litter, classify the items by material type, & look for epibionts. 📷 J. de Jesus

#ProjectDeepDive Since the OT-II project started in April 2024, there have been 3 successful sampling events. Preliminary results from the 1st & 2nd events show that over 19k items of litter have been removed from 120 beaches around the world, 2k of them with epibionts!
