My PhD thesis Neural Transfer Learning for Natural Language Processing is now online. It includes a general review of transfer learning in NLP as well as new material that I hope will be useful to some. ruder.io/thesis/

Don’t need parallel data with a pivot language for cross-lingual sentence embeddings. Don’t need complex model combinations for parallel corpus filtering/mining. To appear at ACL2019 Repl4NLP: arxiv.org/abs/1906.01942

Ever really understood why back-translation (BT) works? BT with sampling, noise, N-best? All BT siblings explained in a unified formulation within cross entropy -> useful insights and better BT sampling. A solid work by Miguel Graça at ACL2019 WMT: arxiv.org/abs/1906.07286

I'm unnerved by common claims of "with our super duper library X, doing Y is just 5 lines of code: ...". Ok you hid a lot of code under defs and reduced flexibility. I'd rather see it be 50 lines of code, with nice modular building blocks where various reconfigurations are clear.
