Very proud of this work by Faeze Ghorbanpour Thiago Zordan Malaguth and me, which addresses the left censoring issues in migration research that uses digital trace data. It will appear in the proceedings of #ICWSM2025. Faeze is going to present it there. doi.org/10.48550/arXiv…

📄We show how adding nationality (via language models) can transform migration studies, helping distinguish emigration vs. return migration. 🇺🇸➡️🇨🇳 Literature reports high US→China emigration using academic origin. But with name origin, ~48% are return migrants (vs. 33%).📊
