Rowan Walker recently presented her Timbavati Gabbro research plan at the Savanna Science Network Meeting. Thereafter, she embarked on her 1st major sampling trip, covering ~270 km from Pretoriuskop to Shingwedzi. We’re excited to follow her during the next phase of her research!

Postdoc Dr Ariela Mazoz & Prof Gary Stevens headed into the field on 31 Mar/2 Apr 25 to study the Cape Granites at Millers Point and Llandudno. Their work focuses on the compositional heterogeneities within granite layers—key to understanding how these iconic rocks formed.

From 14–22 April, Anesu Karadzandima, Kereemang Goaaga, Zanika de Mon, Dr Heleen Vos & Dr Nonsikelelo Hlongwa conducted fieldwork in Saldanha Bay, collecting dust & soil to study toxic metals, marine impacts & microbial dynamics. 🌍🧪 #earthsciences

8–15 May: Postgrads Rowan Walker & Caitlynn van Wyk attended the SEGs 9th Michael J. Fitzgerald Student Mapping Course in New Mexico, USA. Joining an international cohort, Rowan & Caitlynn spent a week honing their field skills at the Copper Flat Cu-Mo Porphyry–Breccia system.

17–18 May: ES 2nd years went to the West Coast, accompanied by Prof Fietz & Dr Tucker. First, a visit to the West Coast Fossil Park & Museum. From there, students visited a variety of river & harbour sites & collected water samples that were tested for water quality parameters.
