I think all of us at BBC News (UK) feel immensely proud to count the phenomenal Barbara Plett Usher as one of our own, bringing critical reporting from inside Syria during this moment of history. Stay tuned throughout the day on BBC News (UK) for the latest updates and in-depth reporting.

Asad is safe in Moscow for the time being, but he’s not secure. When Putin goes, as he will, his successor may well want to patch up relations with the West by handing Asad over to the International Criminal Court. Serbia did precisely this with Milosevic, Karadzic and Mladic.

Wonderful to see my good friend and BBC colleague, Lina Sinjab, reporting from the streets of her own city after years of exile. Revolutions are enthralling, heady things. What happens afterwards is sometimes less good. We can only hope.
