Jaywalking laws have nothing to do with public safety. Oakland PD deprioritized bike/walk stops in 2018 & issued zero jaywalking tickets in 2019, yet severe pedestrian injuries & deaths actually dropped 11% from 2017 to 2019. Pass #AB1238 Gavin Newsom!

#AB1238 will make pedestrians safer at little to no cost to the state. Plus, it will eliminate pretextual police stops for jaywalking that make the public less safe. It’s time to move forward with decriminalizing jaywalking. Gavin Newsom

Traffic safety experts and social justice advocates agree that policing pedestrian movement has led to the disproportionate targeting of Black people — and doesn’t actually make streets safer. laist.com/news/transport…

CA’s jaywalking laws don’t really keep pedestrians safe & are arbitrarily enforced with tickets disproportionately given to communities of color. It’s time to legalize safe crossings under my bill, #AB1238, which is on the Governor’s desk. #FreedomToWalk laist.com/news/transport…

Join our Twitter Town Hall tomorrow (9/16) on #AB1238 from 12-1pm PST. This is our FINAL push to decriminalize jaywalking and get Gov. Newsom to sign the bill into law!

The governor’s veto of the safety stop bill is very disappointing. The Governor cites the importance of safety and climate and equity, but does not understand how supporting walking and bicycling advance those goals. We have some educating to do.
