Watch this remarkable interview by emily m and then listen to Jay Rosen speak to Lionel Barber and me about the terrifying "fact-reversal" currently happening on the Tumpist right prospectmagazine.co.uk/podcasts/media…

A one day waft of hot air from the continent brings 32Β°C today, after a cool start to July. 50 years ago that would be a remarkable temperature. Routine now.

When Labour left power in 2010 treasury chief sec Liam Byrne left a note β€˜there’s no money left’. UK debt was Β£1trillion. Westminster joke is that outgoing Conservative treasury chief sec Laura Trott didn’t leave a note because - debt Β£2.7trillion - Treasury couldn’t afford the

What do you want to happen? When we start to control grazing (as opposed to set stocking) we have more control over the rest, the recovery, the grazing impact, livestock condition, managing around plant species.

Farm productivity has to be judged as NET not GROSS Minus inputs - or it isn’t beneficial productivity When you judge acres on what they produce minus inputs it turns out loads of acres are actually producing less than the energy inputs that were used to create the outcome

So, given the massive uncertainty in estimating carbon stocks & sequestration rates in different landcovers/ecosystems how on Earth will we know if we’ve hit net zero? agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

My conclusion from this Royal Society meeting is that we can’t expect the markets to value nature (not until it’s too late) & so we need to legislate

β€˜Is soil a dirty word’ soil is impacted by lack of root depths. Compaction is an issue, often need to rest pastures. Need to deliver nature based solutions. Change of climate has impacted soils. High additional inputs impacts, due to market demand. #RoyalWelshShow

Probably the most frustrating moment of my recent excursion to Transsylvania was when I saw one of the most colourful grasslands of my life, the former cow pasture of Forteni grazed by sheep 7 years later. Flower richness had decreased by almost 100 %. Photos from same spot.

The UK is getting hotter and wetter. 50 years ago 28Β°C happened 4-6 times a year in England - now 12-20 Number of very wet days almost doubled in some counties rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jo… If only we’d been warned decades ago we could have been more prepared. Oh, we were.

Is it a coincidence that all of these NAO reports damning the idiocies of the last Government, were published after that Government fell from power?

Juniper acting as a nurse plant for aspen suckers in the Cairngorms, with heather just beginning to go purple! Always interesting to see natural processes in action.

Nature recovers the land best. No Planting. No seeds. But species rich grassland interspersed by trees here in former arable (18 yrs), Norfolk. Nothing special about situation. We need to trust natural processes more than we currently do @woodlandbirder Tony Juniper

One interesting aspect of the Knepp wilding project is how species, such as purple emperor and turtle dove, haven’t read the ecology textbook and thrive in the wrong habitat. Here I wind up the visionary ⁦Charlie Burrell⁩ More Knepp videos at youtube.com/@bill_sutherla…

One of the most effective way to save nature is to designate Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and then ensure those sites are managed so the species & habitats on there thrive. 10 years ago a NE strategy stated that all sites for key grassland habitats should be designated.
