I bought my eldest an ice cream after his first day of school. It's now become a tradition - they always get ice creams on the first and last days of the school term (or hot chocolate if it's really cold). They love it and so do I.

Watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice. Darcy's 1st proposal is at the end of episode 3. Tom: I didn't realise it happened so early. Me: It's the midpoint! Change the story at the midpoint! Anyway, don't worry if you haven't read the writing manuals. Half the time you do it anyway.

It's the double! Yours From the Tower is nominated for the The Carnegies in Writing and Godfather Death for Julia Sarda's incredible illustrations. Thank you so much to every librarian who has read and loved the book - we really do appreciate you.

And we're done! Three days, five schools, nine sessions, probably over 800 children ... Thanks, Northern Children's Book Festival NCBF, it's been a blast. Until next time!

This year, many children may not be looking forward to Christmas. A special book gift from BookTrust can ensure more children who need it most experience the #MagicOfBooks this Christmas and long after the decorations are gone. Will you help? booktrust.org.uk/xmas

My nine-year-old gave the book 10/10 and said it was one of the best books he'd read all year. He really enjoyed the film too.

Unexpected parenting things: trying to explain the Monty Hall Problem to a mathematically-minded nine-year-old. No, he didn't get it. I had diagrams, spoons, fractions, the lot.

Lying in bed listening to yet another storm blowing past my windows, California wildfires, rising temperatures. Please, Labour, do the right thing on this one. This isn't the chaos with Ed Miliband I signed up for.
