We had a fantastic summer hosting James, a high school student from the Draelos Scholar Program. He was an incredible addition to the lab. All the students in this program truly amazed me. The future of STEM is in good hands!

A 🧵 about women applying for things. We’ve run a postdoc seminar series for the past few years. Our selection is entirely anonymized. We read only the research statements. No CV’s, no names, no lab references. But when all was revealed this year, 8/10 finalists were male.

Since we're talking about funding of absurd research by NIH and other federal agencies, the funded scientists: - watching flies fuck - giving rats massages - spending years digging into why jellyfish glow - tracking penguin poop from space - using horseshoe crab blood

And what did the taxpayer get? Watching flies mate led to the sterile insect technique, eradicating the screwworm fly from North America, saving the livestock industry over $20 billion and reducing beef prices by 5%.
