#OTD 1902 Dr. Samuel Elbert passed away. Elbert was the first Black in Indiana to be licensed as a physician. Elbert was unwelcomed in the offices of most white doctors. He received his license to practice in 1871 and was appointed to the Indianapolis Board of Health in 1872.

#OTD 1912 James M. Simms passed away. He bought his freedom in 1857 for $740. In 1867, Simms established theĀ Southern Radical and Freedmen’s Journal. Simms was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1868.

#OTD 1934 Lucy F. Simms passed away. Simms taught school in Harrisonburg for 58 years without missing a day. Lucy Simms was born into slavery, made her way to Hampton Institute for her training, and then taught three generations of students.

#OTD 1933 Richard Hatcher passed away. He was an attorney and politician who served as the first Black mayor ofĀ Gary, Indiana, for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988. From 1980 until 1981, Hatcher served as president of theĀ United States Conference of Mayors.

#OTD 2004 Dr. Charles D. Watts passed away. Watts was North Carolina's First African American Surgeon. In 1943, he earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine, becoming the first board-certified black surgeon in North Carolina.

#OTD 2019, Sadie Roberts-Joseph activist and founder of the Odell S. Williams African American Museum was tragically killed. Roberts-Joseph was a matriarch and jewel in the Baton Rouge community and organized Juneteenth celebrations every year.

#OTD 2012 Hattie Mae Canty passed away. She was a labor activist in Las Vegas for employment rights and unfair labor practices by the casino owners. She was arrested at least six times while striking. In 1983 she established the Culinary Training Academy.

#OTD Rev. John Wesley Edward Bowen Sr. passed away. Bowen attended Boston University where he became the first Black to earn a Ph.D. During the Atlanta Race Riots, he offered Gammon as a shelter for blacks. He was one of the many blacks beaten at the hands of white Atlantans.

#OTD 2007 Quessie Johnson passed away. She was the first woman cab driver in Rocky Mount, NC she worked for United Cab Company. Johnson was a driver for 14 years, from 1954 to 1968. Despite working during segregation, she had passengers of all race.

#OTD 1920 Rev. Helen Sinclair passed away. Known as Queen Mother she was a civil rights activist, humanitarian, and prison chaplain. She provided spiritual guidance, advocacy, and dignity to over 48,000 inmates throughout her lifetime.
