I'm seeing an increasing number of grad school applicants who *do not* waive their right to access their recommendation letters. I've advised & been advised that you should always waive as it makes letters more credible. Are students no longer receiving this advice? Am I wrong?

Model solves for new U.S. consumer prices for all products. Here are products with US price increases >2%, up to 13%. Lots of industrial inputs & food products, unsurprisingly given CAN/MEX/PRC imports. 2/3

There seems to be a debate on Twitter about the value of high skilled immigration in the US So here's a bit of data in case that's useful If you're hospitalized and your physician graduated from a foreign medical school? You are LESS likely to die than if your physician

By the way, foreign medical graduates are also WAY more likely to Practice in rural areas Practice in other underserved areas And go into primary care So yes, they are filling a critical need And they are good too

New paper! Despite recent advances in reasoning models and LLM scaffolding for particular use cases, we don't have estimates for how these new tools are impacting worker productivity. We did an RCT to measure these impacts with junior associate level legal work tasks.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
