As Nesta explores the impact of family income on child development, our trustee Liz Ditchburn asks why more people across the UK aren't talking about the Scottish Child Payment. Read her thoughts in a blog originally published with the David Hume Institute nesta.org.uk/blog/why-arent…

Join me, Nick Ridpath, Paul Johnson, Naomi Eisenstadt, Donna Molloy and Ruth Maisey from Nuffield Foundation at 10am today to discuss new Institute for Fiscal Studies research on the impacts of Sure Start on school outcomes and what it means for current and future policy 👇

So excited to publish this research today with Institute for Fiscal Studies colleagues thanks to funding from Nuffield Foundation Sure Start joined up services around the child in the early years and boosted educational outcomes particularly strongly among disadvantaged children

A key takeaway from this thread and our report: the large effects we see at GCSE are driven by one type of centre (SSLPs). These had bigger budgets, with more spending on teacher input into learning and outreach to families in need of extra support, with big impacts.

Strong positive effects of SureStart on GCSE results for poorer children. More strong evidence that well designed early intervention can be very effective. Also shows importance of high quality evaluation. Great work by my colleagues. Policymakers take note.

Sure Start worked. It had big long term effects on the educational achievement of poor children. Its demise is a study in policy failure - over centralisation, over extension, poor data, "not invented here syndrome". thetimes.co.uk/article/sure-s…

Piece on Sure Start free to read here. A cost effective programme enhancing life chances of poor children. A series of policy mistakes saw it diluted and effectively ended. We have chosen a different route: childcare subsidies for working families, not support for poor families.

After many months of work, it's finally here. We've built a tool that lets you adjust tax &spend and see what happens to debt and borrowing. The next Chancellor will inherit spending cuts and tax rises. They will have a tough job- what would you do?
