Scottish 5 Shillings coin of Queen Anne. Dated 1705 and minted in Edinburgh, it’s one of the last Scottish coins ever struck. The final Scottish coins would be issued in 1706. From the Hunter Collection The Hunterian #Numismatics #ScottishHistory #Royal #Stuarts #History #Museums

Have said it before, but work I've being doing today has reminded me: the blasphemy trial of Thomas Aikenhead (1696-7) was one of the weirdest Scottish criminal trials in the whole of the early modern period. Bizarre and unprecedented from start to finish.

Interesting (I hope) for fellow fans of James Stewart of Goodtrees (1635-1713): many of #PrivyCouncil's endmost C18th meetings were held in his lodgings rather than Holyroodhouse. Imo, this speaks to the increasing volume of govt business dumped @ Lord Advocate's door after 1692.

Excited to speak on behalf of the The Scottish Privy Council, 1692-1708 team and share some of my research into the often mysterious mess that lurks beneath the neat and tidy Privy Council Registers…

We are hosting a major conference to mark the end of the Scottish Privy Council Project. Paper proposals welcome on any aspect of early modern government and governance in Scotland, including international comparisons, but with special focus on c.1688-c.1707. Please share!
