Glasgow’s Renfield Street Odeon ran Christmas Tree present appeals in the late 40s. Here’s a peek at two lovely hand-made press books documenting these. Originally a Paramount, the US studio sold its UK cinemas to Odeon during WWII for fear of losing them to enemy invasion!

#AHFadvent 10: Christmas has come early at the Broadway Cinema, Prestwick! 🎄 This community-owned, Art Deco building is being brought back into meaningful use as a cinema, a multi-purpose entertainment venue, and an inclusive dementia-friendly space. 👉 bit.ly/3ZK6wjo

95 years ago, the Glen Cinema disaster in Paisley claimed 71 young lives in a tragic stampede caused by panic over a smoking film canister. This tragedy reshaped safety laws, ensuring doors open outward & public spaces are safer. We remember the lives lost. #GlenCinema #Paisley

What movies do you remember seeing at the Kelburn? A lovely view of Sherwood Church, a Gothic revival gem in Paisley since the 19th century, alongside the Kelburn Cinema—a beloved spot for film lovers. In the foreground, the cosy Sherwood Café.

The rooftop space was originally the cafe, winter garden and tea lounge of the Arabic-inspired Salon Cinema, opened in 1913, and attributed to architect Thomas Baird Jr. The building was later overclad to become the Lumley House sports shop.

Lost Glasgow AmCam Fragments of the original decorative scheme were intact above suspended ceilings in Rooftops when we surveyed the building for ScottishCinemas.org in 2007ish, including moorish style archways mirroring details of those on the original facade. scottishcinemas.org.uk/glasgow/salon/…

Last day of bingo at the Capitol in Leith was on Jan 19th. It ran as a cinema from 1928 till 1961 before conversion to bingo and will be redeveloped as a student residence, retaining only some exterior walls. Unusual for being entered under a railway arch! edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh…

#UrbanExploration in #Glasgow: I was lucky enough to get inside Tusk / The Waverley Tea Rooms in Shawlands. Interesting to see that the good Watson, Salmond & Gray classical plasterwork interior of 1922 largely survives behind the “Temple of Doom”-like box built for Tusk 👀👇🥰!

An odd question, is there such thing as a cinemas critic? Not a critic of films or cinema but a critic who focuses on the cinemas themselves from their ambiance, decor & comfort to their technical & programming quality. Wanna know if so and if not, would love to fill that void!

The La Scala cinema on Sauchiehall St photographed in 1954. It was originally built as a warehouse but was converted to a cinema in 1912, one of the largest of the time, seating 1000. It closed in 1984. The entrance can still be seen if you visit Waterstones. 📷 City Archives
