Today is International Day of Families and what better way to celebrate the day than by reading some of Seamus Heaney’s poems about his own family?! Heaney explored family love throughout each of his twelve poetry collections. #InternationalDayofFamilies #NLI #SeamusHeaney

A huge thank you to @kennethdonfield of @ncad_dublin for joining us for an inspiring lecture on the Great Drawings of Irish Artists, and a still-life drawing session. We were delighted to see such a great turnout for the event and the beautiful finished drawings in our Rotunda.

Today we are celebrating the 59th anniversary of the publication of Heaney’s first poetry collection #OnThisDay in 1966. In the exhibition, we have the actual letter where Heaney learnt of the exact publication date and that he would be paid 18 shillings. #SeamusHeaney #NLI

As we continue to mourn the passing of Paul Durcan, one of Ireland’s most renowned contemporary poets, we are reflecting on the mutual admiration he shared with Seamus Heaney. #NLI #SeamusHeaney

Even though Seamus Heaney’s poems are not on the Leaving Cert curriculum this year, we would still like to wish students from both school years all the best and remind them of the importance of ‘keeping going’. The next few weeks are purely stepping stones to greater things.

A revised version of Heaney and Polish poet and academic Stan Baránczak’s translation of Laments by the 16th Century Polish poet, Jan Kochanowski was published #OnThisDay in 2009. This quote conveys the poet's grief after losing his young daughter, Ursula.

In a BBC interview with John Edwards in 1980, Heaney described how much things have changed on the land over the years. Mechanisations altered the rhythm of life from the 1940s which was ‘almost a medieval rhythm’. A photograph by Hughie O’Donoghue inspired the poem.
