It’s a green oasis in parts of the Northern SA Mallee where crops were sown early April into subsoil moisture 🌱🌧️ Rare to think that this part of the state could have some of the most advanced crops to date.. Confident dry sowing and chasing moisture some of the keys πŸ”‘

Legumes in the Northern Mallee having a crack after the completion of all early season operations. 30mm for June has given them a welcome boost πŸš€

Despite the challenging start to the season, targeted soil amelioration proving to support significant improvements in NWS and crop germination and establishment. Looking like a solid ROI πŸ€žπŸΌβœ…πŸŒ±

GIA Thunder Lentils looking like a promising variety for the Northern Mallee. Appears to have more vigour and better tolerance to foliage frost than Highland sown within a few days. 67 mm GSR. Great example of plant breeders evolving varieties to increase productivity.

The difference strategic lime applications can make to lentil production in moderately acidic soils. Acid tolerant rhizobium helping but no match for a long term fix.

Deep ripping having a fair impact on compacted sand at the hobby block. Amazing really for 54mm GSR. Crops rubbish where couldn’t rip in the shallow stone. Neo CL seems to be hanging in ok, it can rain any time though 🌧️

Still so much potential despite sub decile 1 GSR in the mallee. Unbelievable really how far farming systems have come. Sown early and deep into stored water βœ… Ripped sand with no constraint βœ… Solid legume history βœ… Setup for whatever the season will bring πŸ™πŸ’¦πŸŒ§οΈ

Lots of difficult decisions being made at present. Trying to capture opportunities where possible to make the most out of a terrible situation. Doesn’t make it any easier. Feel for everyone that’s been hit by Jack ❄️

#Frost - #Lentils 24 Hours and theres new growth and flowers in the Wimmera - They can have another go!!. Most new varieties and breeding lines better for vegetative frost tolerance. Have a look at the standing stubble effect (30cm row space, 20cm tall)... Michael Moodie

🌾HARVEST 2024🌾 Grateful we got what we did, but hopeful that 2025 will deliver more than 85mm GSR and less frost. Nothing is guaranteed in farming except the everlasting hope and positivity that β€˜the big wet’ will arrive next year and having the farm setup to capitalise.

Agree strongly here Matt Rohde .We are the stewards of our own industry. If we don’t respect the labels that are in place for good reason then we can expect more products to be taken away from our armoury against pests and diseases.

Huge thanks to Greg and the Grassroots Agronomy team and clients for hosting the Dodgshun Medlin team today. Always learn so much by getting out of our patch hearing from others experiences on challenges and opportunities for continuous improvement of their farms and farming systems.

Thanks for hosting us Grassroots Agronomy. Outstanding day challenging our thinking and learning about how you and the team are guiding clients to evolve their farming systems and challenge the status quo. Also thanks to Rohan Brill and Felicity Harris for your insights.
