Did you know that this unusual mineral is responsible for the red colour of Mars? Hematite can be found in a variety of forms, including ‘kidney ore,' which is recognisable by its globular appearance known as a botryoidal habit, like the surface you see here. #MineralMonday

We had so much fun investigating minerals with you over half-term. Under the microscope we observed the beautiful minerals in thin sections of rock, and you made fabulous Halloween decorations to showcase these. Thank you for everyone who visited us.🪨

This piece of chalcedony in lava was collected by Darwin in Chile in 1834. It is now part of our 'Beagle' Collection. Chalcedony is composed of microscopic silica crystals. It forms when silica-rich minerals precipitate out of water, usually into cavities of rock. #MineralMonday
