#Memes, mash-ups and fanfiction are widely seen as the #art of the internet. Until recently, however, they existed in a grey area of #copyright law. Forms of social communication such as #memes creatively build on and develop #copyright​ed content. Online, they are often used to contribute to political debates and are an important part of exercising #FreedomOfExpression and #FreedomOfArt.

However, as #pastiche strongly resemble original works, the debate on automatic #uploadfilter​s raised concerns that such forms of internet culture could be blocked, thereby restricting #FreedomOfExpression.

In response to this debate, European lawmakers introduced new rights of use alongside #uploadfilter​s. These legalise the use of #copyright​ed works for forms of social communication such as #parody, #caricature or #pastiche across #Europe.
