Does applying phosphorus (P) both deep and shallow produce better crops than shallow P alone in southern NSW? Shihab Uddin (@NSWDPI_AGRONOMY) reports on the results. Paper: bit.ly/3XvldCC #GRDCUpdates #Wagga

Had an opportunity to present the feasibility of dual (both shallow and deep) banding of phosphorus in the southern growing regions of Australia at the Soils Conference in Darwin.Soil Science Australia GRDC South @NSWDPI_AGRONOMY

Trial at Condobolin, NSW, demonstrating the residual effect of dual (shallow+deep) and shallow phosphorus placement during the third season in 2023 from the initial application in 2021.

Beans at French Park loved the P supplement. Nil P (left) vs. 30 kg/ha annual P (right) for the last three seasons. The site looks dry, but root proliferation with high P rates will surely give access to subsoil water (recorded 560mm water up to 1.5m depth at sowing)!

The residual effect of high P (80 kg/ha) rates in 2nd season vs Control (Nil P right). In 2023 the left plot yielded 7.7 t/ha of wheat vs 5.7 t/ha for the right. The cost of P should be paid off in the first season with more $$$ this season. Trial location French Park, SNSW

The only difference between these plots is P. P was applied in 2022 as 5 & 60 kg/ha shallow plus deep band (left) vs 5 kg/ha shallow band (right). The left plot yielded extra 1.4 t/ha wheat in 2022 and 0.6 t/ha barley in 2023. The residual P benefit is evident in 2024 (canola).

As the season progress the residual P effect is getting stronger during the third season in 2024 from their initial application in 2022. See x.com/ShihabU88/stat… for treatment details and early observations...
