I’m still digesting the detail. But let one thing remain clear: The removal of jury trial from thousands of accused people is being proposed not from principle. Nor necessity. But because successive governments - of all parties - chose to take a chainsaw to the justice system.

This man was not jailed “for a tweet”. He was jailed for inciting racial hatred. The real horror this exposes about the justice system is that this MP was a magistrate, with the power to determine people’s liberty. This is who it is suggested should replace juries.
