Magnificent work from the whole legal team today. The GMC are going to have a hell of a job to explain the inconsistencies & irrationality of their behaviour. Tom de la Mare KC: "The Chesterton’s case embodies everything that is rotten in the system" A bedtime summary 🧵: 1/15

Not a good afternoon for GMC barrister Peak embarrassment with Strict scope will cause redundancies In the case of a truly awful PA it is the supervisor’s responsibility to ensure they are limited to administrative jobs Our regulator’s unaccountability was laid bare today

A densely packed day from both sides, with many poignant questions from Mrs Justice Lambert. The GMC's view is clearly shown by this statement from Rory Dunlop KC: "regulation paves the way for broadening their scope of practice". Grab a ā˜•ļø & settle in for day 2 🧵: 1/30

I’ve thought very hard how to articulate this but I feel less crazy having heard my concerns presented at the high court with a judge nodding along Consultants like this are the problem & if a department might collapse without PA’s, maybe staffing issues should have been raised?

Going back to my anon days I’ve always had huge respect for Rory O'Connor He’s a sounding board of integrity & sense Kindness is the respect to listen & fortitude to disagree, not just telling people what they want to hear because it’s easy He’s nailed this šŸ‘‡

The same department whose response to sensibly restrictive Royal College of Anaesthetists scope was ā€œif implemented, will have a negative effect on the delivery of our anaesthetic service in Sheffieldā€ It’s literally anyone’s guess what they’re letting associates do Sheffield Hospitals ?

The GMC can’t ignore the questions we’ve all been asking much longer The Court demands answers! Why are they happy to endorse a UMAPs.org.uk scope document but ignore expert guidance from the Colleges? Who is really making the decisions there & why?? We find out on 09/06/2025

I am a consultant anaesthetist It took 18 years of hard training at non Mickey 🐭 institutions to say I can work independently This misplaced entitlementšŸ‘‡ is everything that makes the associate project a patient safety disaster And throw in some illegal prescribing as well 🤔

The GMC is the independent medical regulator whose primary role is to ensure the safety & well-being of the public If they are not fulfilling this duty but instead championing a government workforce agenda, should doctors still be funding them?

The 1ļøāƒ£ change The Leng review should suggest is associate back to assistant It was always to dupe patients into thinking they’d seen someone they hadn’t The project dies without obfuscation Let GMC explain why they should regulate assistants that earn > their supervisors

Take a moment to reflect on the fact that newly qualified doctors are asking for Ā£22 ph After rigorous selection, years of graft and Ā£100k of debt they currently earn less than a receptionist? And I don’t want to hear any ā€œjam tomorrowā€ nonsense Residents have my full support

There’s an effort to frame this as a basic industrial dispute, when it goes much beyond that. People have asked questions re why the PA situation has inflamed doctors and why it spills into the pay dispute. I want to start with explaining PAs compared to doctors’ training: 1/
