I hope Hadley Freeman won't mind me sharing this from behind the Times paywall, but it's important. This is the best summary I've read of the authentically liberal position on Israel and Gaza, as well as the anguish and confusion many of my Jewish friends are feeling, right now.

An #Otwituary for musical satirist of the 50s-60s #TomLehrer There’s comedy and parody and levity and melody, Alacrity, sagacity and mockery and repartee, There’s plenty of absurdists and they come at ten-a-penny. There may be one as sharp as him but I can’t think of any.

Just seen Tom Lehrer’s died. Brilliant satirist, lyricist, inspiration. Also let us update his songs more than once on the Bremner, Bird & Fortune shows. So, generous and a gentleman too. RIP a great man

I loved Tom Lehrer. I am so glad I knocked on his door. I am so glad I got the time with him that I did. Am listening today to some of his songs, and some of our conversations. He didn’t want a funeral, memorial or a fuss but he was a legend and genius and curmudgeonly grump.

The amazingly funny and ahead of his time Tom Lehrer - a last reminder of my parents’ vinyl comedy collection - has gone. RIP

The great Tom Lehrer has died aged 97. To have written biting satire that still stands up and makes us laugh 60 or so years later is a remarkable feat. I listen to him always. Inspiration Yascha Mounk wrote this great tribute open.substack.com/pub/yaschamoun…

I love clever versifiers, from Hilaire Bellock & WS Gilbert to Michael Flanders. But the undoubted king of the rhymers is Tom Lehrer. With his sheer bloody intelligence added to his incongruously cheerful piano accompaniments, the man was nothing short of a genius. Pity he was

I hate this aspect of political debate that strips out all nuance and tries to cast all your detractors as bad people. It's not the way to counter populism. (And you can read my column here) thetimes.com/comment/column…

Been listening to Tom Lehrer so much since he died last week. Has there ever been a more mordantly fun lyric (from "Bright College Days") than Soon we'll be out amid the cold world's strife Soon we'll be sliding down the razor blade of life

The articulacy , analysis and intelligence of this lady from London’s East end discussing television’s impact is such a delight. She’s brilliant.
