I attended my first Uni of Birmingham graduation today. I’ve been to so many graduations over the years, but they still make me cry. There’s nothing quite like witnessing the power of education in real time … transforming lives, empowering communities, & changing the world.

Another day, another death. Our research shows that carer-perpetrated homicides are *not* isolated events & *can* be prevented. But when each one is reported separately it's hard for people to see the patterns & create change. koreatimes.co.kr/www/nation/202… #UnpaidCarers #Caregivers

CARERS ALLOWANCE: Pleased to have had a reply from Department for Work and Pensions over my concern last week that getting rid of the cliff-edge (ie go 1p over the Ā£151wk max earnings limit & carers lose ALL the Ā£82/wk payment) wasn't in the remit of the Independent Review of overpayments. It says ā€œAs

ā€œWe’ve also provided a Ā£2,300 rise in carer’s allowance for family carersā€ says Wes Streeting Let’s be clear this isn’t a rise in carer’s allowance, this is a rise in the amount one can earn and claim Carers Allowance IF you can manage your work and a caring role. The weekly

Thank-you to Claire Turner & the wonderful team at Carers Leeds for hosting me this week. In terms of preventing deaths by suicide & homicide, Carers Leeds are leading the pack. It's a privilege to be working with them to support carers in crisis.

We tackled the tricky, but crucially important topic of parent carer suicide. We know many in our community feel alone, and we don’t want you to feel this way. Please seek help and support - Samaritans TEL - 116 123 We also had a more light hearted - trauma tap out on Friday.

Important new research on suicide deaths in dementia has recently been published. My commentary explores the valuable contributions this research makes and highlights directions for the future. intpsychogeriatrics.org/article/S1041-…

Removing someone’s PIP may mean the person who cares for them loses carers allowance. This could be a hammer blow for household finances up and down the country. Disabled people and their carers need more support, not less. Full article: bit.ly/4hTEt7i

Excellent piece by Frances Ryan on the impact of benefit cuts on unpaid carers. Carers are already a high-risk group for suicide, and approx. 13 homicide-suicides each year involve a disabled person & their carer. Benefit cuts will cause more deaths. theguardian.com/society/2025/m…

Last year I met with several Labour MPs to share the evidence on #Suicide risk in #UnpaidCarers. They know the toll #BenefitCuts will have on carers & they're making them anyway. A heartless act by a party that used to pride itself on supporting the vulnerable.

Excellent to see John McDonnell highlighting our research in yesterday's Parliamentary Debate on the proposed cuts to PIP. I agree with John that these cuts will push more carers to the point of suicide. The Labour Party must do better for disabled people & their families!
