as a colonial power, whenever the british state cracks down on dissent, radical movements & worker organising here, it has always done so by drawing on social control techniques it developed in the colonies. and movements here have always been influenced by struggles elsewhere.

radical movements here around abolitionism/workers & political rights were profoundly influenced not only by the French Revolution but Haiti & the Irish rebellion. The British state cracked down on trade unions & radical movements with a raft of legislation in the 1790s & 1810s.

british abolitionist and workers movements at the time had much participation from African & Caribbean activists like Olaudah Equiano, Ottobah Cugoano, Robert Wedderburn, William Davidson and countless Irish radicals.

movements split down radical/moderate lines depending on race/class, & influenced by the state crackdown. e.g. Seditious Meetings Act (1795) restricted size of public meetings to 50. Treason Act (1795) made it high treason to attack the King after his carriage was pelted w stones

The Unlawful Oaths and Unlawful Societies Acts (1797 and 1799) targeted secret societies/corresponding societies. The Combinations Acts of 1799 and 1800 outlawed collective bargaining. (many of these bills were sponsored by that great emancipator, William Wilberforce.)

The Frame-Breaking Act of 1812 was designed to punish the Luddite movement. While the Coercion Act of 1817 gave the government the power to suspend habeas corpus.

The Six Acts (1819) was in response to Peterloo, shutting down radical meetings, censoring the radical press & seizing weapons. And this all took place during a 2nd peak of parliamentary land enclosures in English history - around 3 million acres were enclosed between 1800-1815.

which is all to say - there is no "national" "english" "british" "white" working class, the working class in all its multiplicity is formed by the long hand of empire, including what Britain has done to Palestine. They crack down because they fear us. Let's make them right to.
