It is true that tarrifs *can* work. Helping to build up local industries, then integrating with the world economy allows the fullest participation in it. But tariffs for an economy already integrated (US) cuts them off from world trade. Just ask Nvidia. thetimes.com/business-money…

Starmer said in his defence review speech ('an island of missiles') that public investment of ÂŁ15bn would create 9,000 jobs in building warheads. Britain has 2.6 million manufacturing. So this spending makes no difference to the total, with only useless missiles to show for it.

The US plans for a $1 trillion war budget. So, Britain adding ÂŁ15 billion to its own spending will not shift the military balance of forces. But the war fever being drummed up will help create a mood where war, curbs on rights and more attacks on living standards become the norm.

We should be planning for peace, not war. Labour's plan to significantly increase defence spending off the back of cuts to vital welfare for some of the most vulnerable people in our society is disgraceful, immoral and irresponsible. #WelfareNotWarfare #StopTheWar #UKPolitics

HUGE PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY DEMO TODAY Cutting disability benefits isn’t just cruel — it’s costly. It will destroy lives and cost more in the long run. Even a small tax on the wealthy would raise more. Uplift works. Punching down doesn’t. 🙏Tweet/attend if the 🥄 #WelfareNotWarfare

Using this chart, there has been no austerity since 2016/17, only largesse. It ignores: effect of embedding previous austerity on public services (incl pay), growth of population and its needs, useless spending, eg military and subsidies to business.
