In the 18th Century Josiah Wedgwood manufactured this terracotta plaque of Dr Joseph Priestley. Priestley discovered Oxygen which he called dephlogisticated air 🍃 They were both members of the Lunar Society where they met at Soho House under the light of the full moon 🎑

We at Birmingham Museums Trust are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Benjamin Zephaniah, age 65. As a Museums Trust with a passionate belief in social belonging & solidarity he was a constant inspiration & influence. We had the pleasure of working with him over the years

From visiting Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to see his first typewriter which which was kindly on loan to us, to his recent reflections during the premiere of 'The Tiny Spark' the on-screen reimagining of the 1985 Handsworth Riots directed by Pogus Caesar narrated with Benjamin's words.

Benjamin has and will continue to be an influential figure of culture in Birmingham. We are thankful to be able to share a selection of images from Benjamin's visits to our sites and are exploring ways we can further showcase and celebrate Benjamin, his life and works.

He said it best in 2005 "Birmingham has changed a lot, but for me it's still the centre of the universe", and Benjamin was at the heart of Birmingham.
