“The climate action report reveals that global efforts to tackle the climate crisis remain woefully inadequate. At #COP28, countries, cities & businesses must show how they are scaling up ambitious climate action” - Sophie Boehm #StateOfClimateAction: bit.ly/3QZCnZj

Are world leaders taking the climate crisis seriously? This report card suggests not. Lackluster promises. Distrust. Climate emissions rising. And "existential" crisis for world's largest oil exporter. nytimes.com/2023/11/14/cli…

1. A quick (and selective) thread on food and climate change on day 1 of #COP28 #COP28UAE here in Dubai. There are several really important developments to celebrate; a few important caveats and things to watch out for; and a lot of work still to do.

Two quotes by two scientists have caused a bit of confusion. 👇 I am one of them. So let me explain what I'm referring to here. (1) Karl Mathiesen

The final #GST text - and main #COP28UAE outcome - has been adopted, and is very mixed. The main point of this COP was to secure a course correction to keep the 1.5C limit open. Measured from this perspective, there is insufficient action to close the emissions gap by 2030.

Tears flowed and a lengthy rousing ovation during final plenary just now for AOSIS Chair #AnneRasmussen, as she delivered an emotional response filled with unsparing observations about the final outcomes from #COP28UAE

The #Cop28 outcome lays out that we need to peak global emissions before 2025 - a key deadline for 1.5. Previous drafts contained a clear call to achieve this - requested by SIDS and LDCs, among others. This was watered down in the final text.

"It's not enough for us to reference the science and then make agreements that ignore what the science is telling us we need to do. This is not an approach that we should be asked to defend." This was not the closing act but the opening scene of a renewed fight for 1.5.
