Happy national science week! I participated in the James Cook Uni "Art your Science" competition, using embroidery and watercolour to create a stylized habitat map. A link to the padlet if anyone would like to read about the piece: padlet.com/sophiewalker14…

Great to once again help out with A/Prof Nathan Waltham's Mangroves, Coasts and Estuarine Systems subject James Cook Uni (for what was probably for the last time!). Some great days out in Bowling Green Bay NP and at Annandale wetlands testing water quality and flying some drones!

Who gets hired, promoted and funded? People with citations and grant funding. It's a self-perpetuating status-quo that "make[s] it more difficult for women and other groups to flourish in research careers” says Cathy Foley.

It was great to hear Sophie (she/her) James Cook Uni PhD candidate and The JCU AgTAC member speaking to her thesis on Barriers to the use of aerial #drones in #environmental management and #conservation at the Awayday 2024. Sophie is supervised by Nathan Waltham and Marcus Sheaves.
