IMO if you want a secular pseudo-religious institution to be successful, it needs to include an open bar & limit rituals to conventions of toasting

Because they're not real majors. No "studies" field is built on authentic scholarly principles the way in which philosophy & history are. They were just made up majors invented to appease the radicals of the 1970s, & this is the predictable outcome x.com/data_depot/sta…

New podcast episode out now! A special episode chatting with Randy Nesse about his journey building evolutionary medicine and psychiatry, and where we are going. Stories from the father of the field which will be fascinating to many! (also on Spotify etc.)youtu.be/VG1vSc3vjlg

What a pleasure to do this podcast with Adam Hunt, who has done so much for evolutionary psychiatry! It even made me optimistic about psychiatry's future as it finds its missing foundation in evolutionary biology. I hope this is true—it would be nice not to need to hit ~175g protein per day—but the cynical skeptic in me thinks this might be an agenda to get people to eat less protein for environmental reasons (ie a cow fart agenda)

"approaching culture from an ecological perspective – as phenotypic expressions generated by cognitive adaptations to achieve fitness-enhancing social and environmental goals – has the potential to address questions that theories of social learning and transmission alone cannot"

What with emotion being culturally constructed and the Incas being such a non-WEIRD culture, you gotta wonder what this Inca fighter was even doing or feeling

Some milestones are worth pausing for – and celebrating. Danielle Salvato-Earl, Tanaya Lukaszewski, and Tanya Carlsson are now partners! Their nearly two decades with the agency have shaped both who we are and where we’re headed. This next chapter is bold, intentional, and only

20th-century anthropologists called romantic love a Western invention – our new paper, with data from 9 non-WEIRD societies (N = 937), finds high levels of passion, intimacy & commitment everywhere, adding evidence for the universality of love hypothesis. Link to the pdf below!

Just learned from Pamela Paresky🎗️(Habits of a Free Mind) that the grad student who started the Carole Hooven cancellation at Harvard is an assistant professor now. Before that, she had a President’s postdoctoral fellowship, a program John Sailer has called a “scholar-activist pipeline.”

I am hiring a postdoc to work on a project on moral disgust. This person ideally has expertise in moral psychology, emotions, and/or evolutionary psychology. More details here workingat.vu.nl/vacancies/post….

I googled “is it safe to travel as a woman in Morocco”. Skimmed ~15 recent travel blogs written by women, noticed all featured advice about how to decrease your likelihood of being harassed by men in public spaces, and decided I will not be going. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Y’all have fun though.
