One of my favourite detective fiction facts: CLUE comes from the medieval English CLEW, meaning a ball of thread. Its use was originally figurative, from stories like Ariadne and Theseus, where she gave him a clew of thread to follow and thus solve the puzzle of the labyrinth.

They are now out on Kindle in the US. Really worth getting. Clara Vine a superb heroine, smart, stylish, an actress to her fingertips - manipulating Nazi officers and in love with an Englishman. Deployment of real-life people from Goebbels to Hitler’s lover Eva Braun ace

I‘m enjoying Antonia Hodgson’s The Raven Scholar - true fantasy fiction about politics & supernatural powers, not romantasy - complex, absorbing, brilliantly imagined and with a Hunger Games contest and a murder mystery at its heart. Rec’d.

Absolutely loved paul vidich’s latest spy novel The Poets Game. If you share my taste for realistic yet still thrilling espionage writing then you will love it too.

It was fantastic to talk about my new Clara Vine novel with the wonderful Antonia Senior. We ranged from Berlin in 1942, to astrology in the Third Reich. Spying, stars, and Hedy Lamarr.
