🧠Janelia scientists have reached another milestone in connectomics: A wiring diagram of the fruit fly visual system. With 50K+ neurons, the optic lobe connectome provides the fullest picture yet of one of the most important parts of the nervous system. janelia.org/news/seeing-is…

Excited to share that my postdoctoral work is officially in press at Developmental Cell! I spent my postdoc answering a simple, but often unanswered question: how are cells generated in the correct proportions? 1/x

Latest from the lab: The Sex of Organ Geometry – aka ORGAN ORIGAMI! Organs exist in male and female configurations. For some 3D insights into how and why see rdcu.be/dJnkI (spoiler: it’s mechanochemical)

Former and current lab members Bogdan, Olena, Jakub, and Shadi collaborated with the Yan Lab at UF to show how a protein essential for the insect sense of smell appears important for the survival of smell-sensing neurons in ants. (1/3)

Can't emphasize how under-appreciated these struggles are for immigrants in academia. The playing field is so different. Academia is tough for everyone, but not being eligible to even apply for so many grants without a green card makes it infinitely harder.

My la(te)st review with Claude Desplan Desplan Lab was just published in CSHLPress. In it, we review our current knowledge of mechanisms that underlie circuit evolution. cshperspectives.cshlp.org/content/early/…

Very happy to be receiving the Klingenstein-Simons Fellowship. On an unrelated note, our lab is always looking for motivated postdocs. And we recently raised our salaries to $72k; yes, in Kansas City.

Check out my Spotlight article in Trends in Genetics in which I highlight an exciting article from Amit Singh that appeared in PNAS earlier this year. He identifies a role for the Dve transcription factor and its human ortholog in the placement of eyes. cell.com/trends/genetic…

Here it is! A huge milestone in neuroscience – the complete connectome of the fly brain from the FlyWire team (FlyWire). In this special issue, we have 9 research articles. I’ll try to summarize them in a couple threads starting here 🧵

One the cool possibilities from the #fly #connectome is the ability to run simulations. I've finally got around to experimenting with the "Leaky Integrate and Fire" model by Philip Shiu et al. Here are test simulations of 3x Mi1 optic cells, followed by their whole columns

Why do quiescent neural stem cells look so much like neurons? 🤔 We showed that quiescent neural stem cells transiently adopt a neuronal identity to coordinate reactivation across the CNS! See our latest preprint here: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
