OTD in 1976 Martin Ashby broke Bob Kilby's track record @ the Abbey when he won the opening heat of the Daily Mirror Grand Prix Qualifying Round in a time of 68.0. Malcolm Simmons won the meeting with a 15 point maximum from Bob Kilby who scored 13 & Martin who finished on 11.

Remembering Boguslaw Nowak who passed away OTD in 2024. The 1977 Polish Champion spent the majority of his career with Stal Gorzow leaving to take up a riding/coaching position with Unia Tarnow in 1983. He suffered life changing injuries in a track crash in 1988. R.I.P. Boguslaw.

Remembering Nigel Sparshot who passed away OTD in 1998. Nigel began his career with Crayford in 1978. He would go on to ride for a number of clubs including Milton Keynes, Kings Lynn, Oxford, Exeter, Rye House, Middlesbrough & Long Eaton retiring in 1993. R.I.P. Nigel.

Jack Parker & Graham Warren shake hands before their Golden Helmet Match race clash in June 1949. Jack retained the Title when Graham was unfit to ride in the second leg. Jack had won the first leg 2-0 @ Perry Barr, equally the track record in the second race.

Nigel Boocock leading Ivan Mauger, Roger Hill & Alan Wilkinson (who fell) in heat 1 of the Coventry v Belle Vue British League match @ Brandon in April 1972. Rain caused the meeting to be abandoned after heat 9. The Bees were ahead 28-26 when the ref called a halt to the racing.

Remembering Frank Shuter who lost his life in a traffic accident OTD in 1997. Frank had his first rides @ Templeton Speedway NZ in 1963. Just 2 years later he signed for Swindon, he also raced for Poole & Exeter, winning BL Championship medals with all 3 clubs. R.I.P. Frank.

In 1974 Belle Vue's Chris Morton won the British Junior Championship @ Canterbury. Chris scored a 15 point maximum to take the Title. Steve Bastable of Stoke was runner up with 13 while Eastbourne's Neil Middleditch finished third on 12.

OTD in 1980 over 100 supporters turned up @ the Abbey to take part in a 15 lap walk of the track in aid of the Bob Kilby Testimonial Fund. Bob & Bob Radford were quickly lapped by some of the younger fans. After 4 laps both were seen to be heading to the bar for some refreshment.

Ulf Lovaas leads Norman Hunter in heat 4 of the 25th Anniversary meeting against Oxford @ the Abbey OTD in 1974. Sadly, just like the match back in 1949 Oxford won. However, some pride was regained when Martin Ashby won the second half Evening Advertiser Anniversary Trophy.

Time for another 'Unknown' to take centre stage on Twitter. Gary Pottenger rode a handful of matches for Barrow in the National League back in the 1978 season. Without the likes Gary, there would be no Speedway.

OTD in 1970 the flag over the West Ham Stadium is flying @ half mast. It was a mark of respect for the deaths of riders, Peter Bradshaw, Maryn Piddock, Gary Everett, Malcolm Carmichael & team manager Phil Bishop who had all lost their lives in a road accident in Belgium.
