Despite the massive investment, beach nourishment is a temporary fix. Sand is continuously washed away by natural erosion and storms, necessitating repeated projects. Wrightsville Beach, for example, has undergone 27 projects since 1939, costing $107 million in 2022 dollars.

As sea levels rise due to climate change, the frequency and cost of these projects are expected to increase even more. Experts predict costs could double by 2050, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability and efficacy of beach nourishment.
