We hosted the (1st annual) Texas Biodiversity Symposium Rice University last weekend! We had two days of talks, a panel discussion, then field trips to visit local biodiversity - birding, native prairies & an urban bat colony. Keynote address by Rae Wynn-Grant, PhD was inspiring!

Ancient sloths ranged in size from tiny climbers to ground-dwelling giants. Now, researchers report in Science that this body size diversity was largely shaped by sloths’ habitats, and that these animals’ precipitous decline was likely a result of increasing human pressures.

Among the highlights of our Rice University Tropical Field Biology course in Belize was this shot from a camera trap the students set up along an abandoned road near our research station! Who can tell me the species?
