A quick update on the progression of blackleg upper canopy infection. The symptoms we are seeing at Lake Bolac suggest our recommendations were on point and the season is progressing as expected.

The 2019 fungicide resistance results are in for the 208 stubble samples screened. Similar findings to 2018 with resistance detected only for the DMI fungicides. Individual results will be sent this week to those who submitted samples.

Canola harvest is well underway. If anyone left untreated strips after applying fungicides at 30% bloom for controlling upper canopy infection, we would love to know what yield returns the fungicides gave.

We will be repeating the fungicide resistance screens in 2020. This free service allows you to test your fungal population for resistance to all current fungicides used to control blackleg. Please go to marcroftgrainspathology.com/index.php/2020… to download the protocol/submission form.

Blackleg in the Wimmera is developing on leaves, but it is too late to cause severe crown canker. The risk of Upper Canopy at the moment is lower in the Wimmera due to later flowering.

Blackleg in South West Vic is now severe on leaves and first flowers. If your crop has severe leaf lesions and is commencing flowering it may be at risk of Upper Canopy Blackleg yield loss. Later flowering crops will have much lower risk.
