Hard to argue with this chastening & comprehensive account of how Britain's systems of support for people facing crisis (or multiple crises) - on which we once prided ourselves - need a fundamental overhaul. newstatesman.com/spotlight/2025…

A titan died today. Alasdair MacIntyre’s writings may not be familiar to everyone, but they reshaped the landscape of moral philosophy and showed us how attending to the thought of the past can help us find our way to a more flourishing future.

Such tariffs will hurt the US, the EU and the UK. US-EU trade is worth around $1 trillion, and impeding it will have negative consequences for the entire world. To say "Brexit benefit" is beside the point. Even if we are not hit ourselves, we will be caught in the crossfire.

Harvard's suit v. Trump Admin: "This revocation is a blatant violation of the 1st Amendment, the Due Process Clause.. It is the latest act by the government in clear retaliation for Harvard exercising its 1st Amendment rights to reject the government’s demands to control

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU everyone for the absolute tidal wave of kindness and support I've had over the last 12 hours. I'm pleased to say all is well at this end. I had my treatment almost a year ago to the day, High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound and everything is now

It’s hard to put into words our feelings about the terrible events in Liverpool today. For a wonderful day of joy to be turned into one of horror is an absolute tragedy. All of those hurt are in my thoughts. As always Liverpool will stand together in solidarity. YNWA

3 ways to do opposition spending pledges: 1) cost & fund each pledge: responsible but not show-stopping 2) promise the earth with no numbers 3) make up the numbers, pretend your pledges are funded, & hope the media give you a free pass for being new Today = no.3 on speed

"Only a budget in which, for example, a gambling or a banking levy can be announced, can generate the more than £3bn that would cover the estimated cost of abolishing the 2-child cap" Both a reminder of Labour's mission & a lesson in sympathetic agenda-setting from Gordon Brown.

UN Security Council Resolution 2334 in 2016 said Israel's illegal settlements activity was a "flagrant violation" of international law with "no legal validity". It passed by 14-0. Now Israel's Govt is doubling down. Time for the UK to show & not just say how unacceptable this is

Watching Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" 60 years on. Still great operatic films. Gian Maria Volonté mesmerising, Lee Van Cleef the meanest. Love this Leone quote: "More than an actor, I needed a mask, & Clint Eastwood, at that time, only had two expressions: with hat & no hat".
