It’s been an extraordinarily sad few days for folks in Minnesota. Officials like Mike Lee who use their platform to spew hatred and relish in the wake of others’ incomparable suffering have no business serving in public office.

My book was just sent to press! It'll be available in print end of July. Focusing mostly on Southeast Asia during the 20th c, the book develops an argument about how state-building can present headwinds for nation-building.

Instrumental variables is a false-positive machine! We’ve known this forever, but journals continue to publish them. Somehow 2SLS estimates are often larger than OLS, especially when the first stage is weak. Researchers are so good at explaining away that tell-tale pattern.

In the European Economic Review, Christopher Coyne, André Quintas & I build on James C. Scott's work on legibility. We compare how legibility is developed across alternative institutional settings.

I recently finished reading “Milkman” by Anna Burns. It’s a remarkably thought-provoking and vivid novel, set amid The Troubles in Northern Ireland. I highly recommend checking it out if you get a chance.

One Battle After Another is likely the best film I’ve seen in the past ten years—and that’s coming from someone who usually avoids overhyping new releases. It’s propulsive throughout and remarkably prescient for the present-day US. Check it out on the big screen if possible.

I have a new paper with Daniel Goldstein evaluating whether and how citizens want to address the differential burdens of public goods provision, focusing on the physical costs of US military conflict disproportionately borne by less affluent Americans. academic.oup.com/isq/article/69…
