25 May 1871. The Bank Holiday Act gained Royal Assent. It created new statutory rights to public holidays in England, Wales and Ireland. These were: Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the 1st Monday in August and Boxing Day. Christmas Day and Good Friday were already public holidays.

28 May 1936. Alan Turing submitted his research paper “On Computable Numbers” for publication. It was published in 2 issues of the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society on 30 November and 23 December 1936. It proposed the creation of a universal (computer) machine.

31 May 1669. Samuel Pepys (aged 36) wrote the final entry in his diary. His 1st entry was on 1 January 1660. He feared that writing in dim light was damaging his eyes. His fears were unjustified as he lived another 34 years without going blind. He never resumed his diary.
