Is there a more mysterious bird in the UK? On a stunning night in Staffordshire we ringed a new male Nightjar, which was one of 2 birds present. A Thermal imager really helped us monitor the nets, keep the birds safe and capture some great footage. #secretlives

Hydrobates pelagicus melitensis. During the first night, we identified with my Pulsar thermal camera where the main activity was in the cave. That is where we put the trigger during the second night and the results were fabulous !

Thermal imagers allow us to capture natural footage of species you often can’t see, as they are most active at night. We were lucky enough to get this incredible thermal footage of a Nightjar last night. They love paths! Thermal reduces disturbance and time in the field.

For the last 2 seasons we have been undertaking a project using a thermal drone to locate & monitor Nighjar. The aim is to reduce disturbance & increase the productivity of surveys. Our findings support existing research showing drones do not disturb the birds.

Thermal camera footage of Zino's Petrels displaying high in the mountains of Madeira. A truly unique birding experience to be surrounded by this rarest of seabirds as they called and wheeled around in the darkness at arms length. This guided @windbird tour is not one to be missed

More nest monitoring with the thermal drone this week. Following some sightings, we returned to the area and found this new nest. It's only a matter of meters from a busy track, highlighting the importance of keeping dogs on a lead during the breeding season.

Some more brilliant news from the region! We have successfully ringed three more Osprey chicks, meet 4R3, 4R4, & 4R5. This is the 3rd year the adults have been successful with all 3 birds fledging. Let's hope we see them back in 2027!! Those talons!!

Zino's Petrels in the air at night around Pico de Areeiro. Circling, landing, crawling on the ground, but not close enough for pictures with the infrared system. We have at least two more nights with good weather up top. Stay in touch ! Filmed with Pulsar Merger LRF XT50
