Susan Godsland This is important. We tend to assume that progress in decoding will lead to improvements in reading comprehension, but below a certain level, it doesn't

Emma Turner FCCT gave me a lot to consider in her talk on primary curriculum design. We don‘t have unlimited hours to teach everything. Curric is like a big shop, what are the essentials? What‘s one thing they should leave school able to do? READ of course.

I have never talked to the press about being a creationist missionary, how I left etc - and I do feel really conflicted about sharing this profile. I’ll be clarifying and giving context to lots of things in it over time. 1/ The Observer observer.co.uk/news/science-t…

Whilst the Government’s SEND plan is in the news, I thought it would be useful to highlight this paper: 'Special Educational Needs and Disability tribunals: Dyslexia, scientific validity and equity' by Julian Elliott, Stanbridge & Branigan 2024. bera-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.10…

We often discuss explicit instruction as a method, but rarely as a matter of equity. Its purpose is to provide all students, regardless of background, with the kind of knowledge that can genuinely change their lives. 🧵⬇️

A tiny minority of students discover how to read by themselves. While a few children (often with high language exposure at home and strong working memory) can intuit the alphabetic principle, most cannot. To base an education system on that sub-group is ethically reprehensible.

Just to remind everyone we’re working in a world in which grown adults are arguing about: - the size of the dot in comparison to the comma - the height of the dot - the direction of the curve of the comma on a SEMI-COLON DRAWN BY A 11yo THAT IS GRAMMATICALLY ACCURATELY PLACED

What does the 2025 Writing Framework say about phonics & spelling? ✅ Keep phonics going into KS2 ✅ Teach spelling with reading ✅ Don’t rush joined handwriting ✅ Dictation = low-cost, high-impact Just like we’ve been doing all along! John Walker, Sounds-Write

When educators step into the Psych (𝚿) lane but don’t consistently deliver effective literacy instruction, kids often need outside $ervices to thrive. Despite good intentions, are we deepening the economic and social divides? #Education #Literacy Thoughts?

Mr G All you can do, imo, is read widely and often with the children and teach them in a way that gets them to enjoy it, even if it is just in those moments. The constant pursuit of embedding a culture for reading for pleasure is fruitless, as it won't work for everyone, just like...
