James Marriott This may well come to pass, yes. All the more reason then for writers and thinkers to cultivate high-quality podcasting as well (I would say that of course Suzanne Raine): free cultural expression that may be harder to mimic because machines still lack wit or lateral thinking.

Many thanks to the wonderful Durning Library SE11 for hosting our Garlic & Pearls talk tonight, and many thanks to all those who came along to Suzanne Raine and MURIEL ZAGHA discuss their cultural podcast adventure and the subtleties and surprises of Frenchness and Britishness.

The UK doesn’t really have a capability to intercept ballistic missiles. Type 45 is still going through an upgrade programme and the Houthi missile shot down in 2024 probably represented a different target to these medium-range ballistic missiles.

This week on Garlic & Pearls Suzanne Raine takes to the high seas with tales of PIRATES and the British obsession with the marine Robin Hoods. Pictured: Blackbeard, John Morgan, Anne Bonny and Mary Read. 🏴‍☠️

As we usher in proper summer in this week’s ep of Garlic & Pearls, I tell a thirsty Suzanne Raine that a drink as iconic as Orangina is more than a drink: it’s a carrier of historical, geographical and social identity. Listen to the effervescent story of ORANGINA!

Acting lawfully in anticipatory self-defence requires proof of something that hasn’t yet happened. It is difficult to make such laws work when nations are in a state of permanent mutual hostility.

This week on Garlic & Pearls the ✨ Suzanne Raine concludes her breathtaking narrative of the 1217 Battle of Lincoln. William Marshall and the redoubtable Nicola de la Haie hold the fort. I’m rooting for Prince Louis de France - l’homme providentiel? podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the…

There's a big storm heading for the U.K. and the BBC says: "Many temporary summer structures including tents could be damaged". As Garlic & Pearls demonstrate, perhaps Club Med would have been better: Apple: bit.ly/4mosPnw Spotify: bit.ly/46xChjH

Tune in tomorrow for the first of a short (naturally) series of zappy summery Garlic & Pearls podcasts in which Suzanne Raine and I compare and contrast similar things that our two nations do very differently…
