The government is attacking UCU members. Please RT this thread. Over the weekend a UK secretary of state used Twitter to attack and misrepresent academics. This intervention was made to call into the question the legitimacy of work undertaken by the UK research institute.

The move to instruct a non governmental agency is unprecedented and should cause huge concern to all. UCU will not accept this. We have been in contact with our members throughout the weekend. This union stands by them and we will always protect our members when attacked.

I have today written to the Secretary of State. Not only to point out that her actions are unacceptable, but that it is clear to all what her and her government are attempting to do.

The singling out and targeting of two members for their social media comments has been used as a distraction tactic to justify what the Tories actually want - the abandonment of work on equalities, diversity and inclusion. We see them for exactly what they are.

We need to see an end to this lobbying of non governmental agencies, an end to attacking equalities work, but as importantly, we need ministers to spend their time calling for peace and not pushing political agendas and culture wars.
