It is with our deepest sorrow that we annouce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Dorothy Hollingsworth. She was surrounded by family, peace, and love. Her smile, wisdom and strength will be greatly missed. --The Hollingsworth Family

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dorothy Hollingsworth, a trailblazing public servant and educator in Seattle. I was proud to call her my friend. Her leadership on educational equity and equality continues to be felt today for generations of Seattleites.

A lifelong advocate for education and champion for civil rights, Dorothy was the first Black woman to manage a city agency and the first in WA elected to a school board. She was a trusted community leader giving every child in Seattle the chance to succeed. We will miss her.

As I’ve said before, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana. Today, I’m taking steps to end our failed approach. Allow me to lay them out.

I’d also like to note that as federal and state regulations change, we still need important limitations on trafficking, marketing, and underage sales of marijuana.

Sending people to jail for possessing marijuana has upended too many lives – for conduct that is legal in many states. That’s before you address the clear racial disparities around prosecution and conviction. Today, we begin to right these wrongs.
