Fantastic research from Prof Tom Gernon: “Studying geological events offers valuable insights that can help us grasp how the Earth may respond to future climatic and environmental stresses.”

NEW: Gold is found as big nuggets in quartz veins—and we have never known why. Now we have a shocking answer: electricity, made by earthquakes shaking quartz, is gathering particles of gold and growing them into shiny nuggets. Earth is wild. Great to see our Prof Prof Tom Gernon appear in IFLScience this week. It was for his latest study which showed how a “geological tag team” triggered one of the most tumultuous times in marine life history 🌊🌎🐟 Read it here👇 iflscience.com/catastrophic-a… OceanEarthUniSoton ExploringOurOcean

NEW: Mount Everest isn't just the world's tallest mountain; it's freakishly tall, towering above its neighbouring peaks. But why? It turns out that a river has washed away so much rock that the mountain is 'floating' higher on the mantle! Me NYT Science nytimes.com/2024/09/30/sci…

Excellent video summarising our colleague Professor Juerg Matter's remarkable The Earthshot Prize winning research on capturing carbon - come to University of Southampton to learn about this planet saving science as part of an undergraduate degree! youtu.be/mRFZ-yBBx40?fe…

Huge congrats to ARIA advisor Demis Hassabis. Breaking through the barrier of winning a nobel outside academia is rare, but this may be the first case in history of the award going to an entrepreneur whose nobel work was done in the company they founded. Hopefully first of many!
