#txlege House lobby brimming with parents, kids and librarians reading to protest SB 13, which is set for a vote today. Bill would add public review period for all new school library purchases and require school board approval of each + ban “sexually explicit” books

Grateful to the families and students who came to the Capitol today to stand up for access to books in our public libraries. 📚 #TxLege #SB13

Book bans do not keep our students safe; rather, they hinder their development into well-rounded, adults and engaged citizens. SB 13 is a dangerous bill for our public schools and will hurt LGBTQIA+ kids. For these reasons, I voted NO on SB 13 today, for our children. Books are

Story in 3 acts: 1. Erin Zwiener naming classic books that could be banned from TX schools under SB13. 2. Brad Buckley, in response, saying no parent has mentioned those titles in his committee. 3. Me mentioning those books in his committee. tiktok.com/t/ZTjxPdY7y/

Breaking- HB3225 which would have set age restrictions at public libraries failed to pass the Senate deadline tonight. We are glad to know that Texas public libraries can continue serving patrons and allowing families to make their own choices.

HB3225 is dead! The Tx Senate is no bunch of bleeding hearts, & they’ve done damage to the right to read this session. But last night, when it needed a floor vote to pass, the Senate let this it die. You did this, Texans. Here’s what I wrote after the bill’s 1st hearing:

Book bans and censorship have never only been about erasing stories. They’ve always been about erasing people. Laws like SB 12 will be used to remove LGBTQ+ and BIPOC stories from classrooms and will shove LGBTQ+ students into closets. Cruelty is the point.

What does it look like in 2025 when book banners come for your district? Documents from Nacogdoches ISD in Texas give an updated snapshot. tiktok.com/t/ZTj4STDUT/

Rep. Erin Zwiener has been defending books that deal with the topic of sexual assault for years. Yesterday, some folks on this site came after her for that. Here’s my take, as a parent, on the value of those books, which are often banned from Tx schools. tiktok.com/t/ZTjpePdqs/

As a parent, I want students to have access to books that name sexual violence for what it is, challenge the mindset that leads to it, and point out the damage it causes.

Shalayla Senator Angela Paxton Brad Buckley Christin Bentley SD-1 SREC She’s right, SB13 is a poorly written regulatory nightmare. It’s subjective, confusing & impractical. It’ll be implemented differently in every district across TX. Texas Association of School Boards will try & help districts make sense of it, but this disaster is on Senator Angela Paxton & the bill’s architects

💔💔💔 We are Texas parents before we are anything else. Our hearts are broken for those affected by the flooding in Kerrville and the Hill Country. In the face of unfathomable loss and tragedy, Texas is doing what she does best- taking care of each other.
