🚨 Every December the UN General Assembly’s 5th Committee (budget) negotiations on the following year’s budget go down to the wire. This year’s no different. As usual, governments hostile to human rights launch a desperate bid to defund UN human rights work. A thread 🧵 1/x

16 years ago, left-wing lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova were gunned down by neo-Nazis in downtown Moscow. Markelov's writings are a vital record of Russia's violent transition from the 90s to the 2000s - see in English below opendemocracy.net/en/odr/remembe…

Today, sham elections are taking place in Belarus amid raging repression, in a country where people cannot exercise their rights to freedom of thought, expression, information, or association and assembly. They cannot be seen as free nor fair. Human Rights Watch hrw.org/news/2025/01/2…

Trump's scheduled to speak with Putin today. Any discussions about ending the war in Ukraine should address releasing detained Ukrainian civilians & opening pathways to securing justice for war crimes. War crimes & CAH by 🇷🇺 forces are well-documented hrw.org/news/2025/03/1…

The Trump administration’s budget cuts stopped a Yale lab’s work to find abducted Ukrainian children. Not only that. The lab’s team members lost access to the irreplaceable data they had collected. hrw.org/news/2025/03/2…

On March 21 Valery Bailo’s died in a Russian prison. His only “”crime” was being a Jehovah’s Witness in Russia, for which 🇷🇺 sentenced him to 2.5 years in 2024. He should never been prosecuted. 🇷🇺 should free all JWs behind bars for their faith.

Scoop: The Trump administration reversed its decision to terminate a U.S. initiative that documents alleged Russian war crimes, including the mass abuction of Ukrainian children to Russia. It's a rare about-face following pressure from U.S. lawmakers and Christian evangelicals

Golos, the Russian fair elections group, was one of the 1st groups targeted by Russia's "foreign agent" law 12 years ago. Grigory Mekonyants, its co-chair, now facing 6 years in prison. It's a act of colossal injustice. Grigory, you are a model of courage and integrity.

Grigory Melkonyants’s prison sentence sends another chilling signal to all Russian rights defenders who continue their work at great personal risk. The government should free him immediately and put an end to politically motivated repression.@HRW hrw.org/news/2025/05/1…
