The Dutch ship ‘De #Liefde’ landed in #Japan in 1600 and it is mesmerizing to see its original figurehead, a statue of #Erasmus. A national treasure in Japan, it rarely leaves #Tokyo National #Museum archives. But now on loan in #Osaka Castle to celebrate 425 years of relations!

The "Kruithuis" in #Delft (Zuid-Holland), built in 1660 after the 1654 Delft gunpowder explosion, was designed by architect Pieter Post as a gunpowder storage facility. Located outside the city walls for safety, the complex includes a gatehouse, guardhouse, and two powder towers

1/ A beautiful mystery or do I need better glasses? A set of four gouaches came up at auction in NYC a few days ago described as “The Private Collection of Prince Charles of Lorraine in Brussels, each dated 1778”. 🧵

2/ They are described a depicting his collection inside his neoclassical Brussels palace (now part of Belgium’s Royal Library), the labels attached include many legendary Old Master names. But I couldn’t find a match linking all these works to him, or to each other, in 1778. 🧵

3/ Still, the set soared to $16k hammer. So what might it be? An idealized or mislabelled/misidentified gallery? A beautiful mystery in any case. Curious to hear others’ thoughts. For transparency; I didn’t bid nor do I know the new owner. Simply very intrigued and curious.
