The first session of the symposium is happening Featuring some of our amazing community partners discussing the challenges/opportunities of doing community partnered work, from a community-partnered perspective. What do researchers get wrong? Here from our community experts!

Meredith Shockley-Smith: Lead with the data, but the research is secondary to getting better outcomes. That is the primary goal!

Renee Mahaffee Harris: Research can inform solutions, but using voices, engaging community itself may not change the fundamental structures that are causing the conditions of inequity. We all know the data, but we need to engage structures. Structures are linked to resources.

Ashlee Young: As community partners, as researchers, we have to ask, "What risk are we willing to take to ensure equity?" Sitting at the table is not enough. Systems are made of people, and people have to take the risk to do the work.

Happening now: faculty researchers talk about their perspective on community-partnered research.

Carolette Norwood: There is a tendency to think of entering and working with communities with a colonial mindset: of an extractive logic, of "doing this for you." We need to be aware of how colonizing logic guides our actions as researchers.
