Not a bad olive crop this year. Filling out and changing colour. Time to look into brining methods. Worth a try 🤷🏼‍♂️ Any advice gladly received.

It's been the best ever year for our Damson Tree, the amount of fruit is biblical. We have been here 35yrs and the tree much longer. Ties in nicely with the warmest Summer on record #damsons #fruit #summer #Brampton #Cumbria

Everything is just so early this year it's hard to keep up with so many varieties, but it's an enjoyable challenge!! On a side note, does anyone know anywhere we can get more of these crates??? #appleharvest #pearharvest #harvesttime #harvest

At Adrian Scripps, the hail nets are being rolled back as Gala harvest begins 🍎 Hail is one of the biggest risks to growers – a single storm can bruise or scar apples, making them unsellable. Because British weather is so unpredictable, many orchards use hail netting for

Wisley apples almost all harvested, very early due to plenty of heat and light rather than stress, fruits on the small side due to drought, but not a bad crop for an unirrigated, spray free orchard.

The quince trees are full of ripe fruit & looking lovely. So many ways to use them in preserves (jelly, pastilles, membrillo, chutney) & liqueurs (gin, vodka). Personal favourites are quince & cardamon mincemeat and the fabulous steamed quince & walnut pudding (with custard). 💛

Distinct quince aroma as heavy crop of quince ripen a month earliar than usual at Wisley in the quince orchard. Quite a lot of codling moth damage this year but not disastrous

Another important measure is sweetness. Growers use a refractometer - a tool also used in winemaking 🍷- to check sugar content in the juice of British apples. Supermarkets expect at least 12%, with some varieties reaching 15–20%. Robert explains how this test ensures flavour and

Interesting that this fig grower in Japan first covered the ostiole (hole in the base of the fruit) to limit internal insect damage on slow-ripening fruit, but then had to bag it because bugs were eating the delicious skin 😋

Turns out these root-like growths on our Crap Apple tree are 'Burr Knots'. For anyone interested, there's an excellent and comprehensive article on them in this #Permaculture article👇 deepgreenpermaculture.com/2022/07/07/bur…
